New York Fashion Week is rocking my theoretical socks off and there's only one way to celebrate my sock-less excitement... the moment you've all been waiting for...THE EDGIES ARE HERE!
It's a little early in the fashion week game, but my motto is if you spot a trendie, you give an Edgie, not to be confused with a wedgie. (Shout out to Nadal's US Open Victory!)
Let's get the festivities started with some black and white (sharp, not blurred cc: Robin Thicke) lines.
Here's a fun game: stare at the images above for ten seconds and tell me how dizzy you get. Like I said, FUN! But really, these looks are fun. So who wins the Edgie Award for the best "When You Zig I Zag" ensemble? I'm going with Edun on this one, because I want that coat on mah bodeh. There's even a zig-zagged runway, come on now! Their new creative director Danielle Sherman killed it this season.
Next up, a lot of our favorite designers got fringey for spring, and I'm not complaining. I never met a fringe I didn't like. That's a lie, but it sounded dramatic and quotable so let's run with it. I think we can all agree though, that fringe, tassels, and all that tickley stuff hanging from a garment is always Fun with a capital F (especially when a good shimmy is involved). I like that designers are showing less of a western, more of a modern take on fringe. But let's not hold our breath; we haven't seen Isabel Marant's show yet.
Would you hate me if I gave the Edgie award to all of the nominees? Yes? Okay. Fine. I'm choosing Phillip Lim as our Fringe Benefits Edgie Winner because I can't handle the radness of those crafty little (big) pants (culottes). But for the record, I'd also wear Rachel Comey and Derek Lam's looks in a heartbeat. And Robert Rodriguez gets some Edgie brownie points for creating a human pom pom. Also, I want to dance the Samba in Christian Siriano's dress.
Move over light-wash ripped denim. We got a new, darker, sleeker, moodier denim in town and I like it. I like it A LOT. The Edgie Award for the best denim nouveau ensemble goes to....drum roll....Thakoon! Wearing denim as a shirt/dress/blazer combo seems fresh to def. Runner up goes to Rachel Comey because she's just always been mad coolified.
Here's a riddle for ya:
Q: What's better than white wide-leg trousers?
To know me is to know I have a serious thing for white wide-leg trousers. I recently scored a pair from The Row for pennies (fine dollars) at the Barney's warehouse sale. Be jealous. Just kidding! You don't have to be because next spring you'll have more than enough to choose from. Let's take a moment to admire the nominees. I'd honestly be stoked to clothe my legs in any of them. Richard Chai Love's extra wide-leg version recalls a certain Christina Aguilera in her Genie in a Bottle video wearing those orange parachute pants and a crop top.
And the Edgie goes to...Phillip Lim! I'm in love with the length, the shape, the fabrication, the pairing of them with that rad peplum top and those flat sandals.
Shiny surfaces are having their moment on the spring runway. Patent leather, vinyl-esque, iridescent, shimmery textures are where it's at. So which look gets the Edgie for shining bright(est) like a diamond? My pick is Misha Nonoo. Her use of iridescence peeking through a soft blazer, paired with printed pants is my kinda thang. I'm not such a shiny lover but a hint here or there can do no wrong.
And that concludes the first portion of our Fashion Week Edgie Awards. Are you diggin these trends like a groundhog digs holes? Which is your favorite?
