This is going to knock your socks
off on! (I'm sorry, I had to.)
What do you get when Hedi Slimane (Saint Laurent) and Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel) both show white tube socks attached to black heels on their Spring 14 runways? Nostalgia. I remember when white tube socks (fine, mine were of the frilly, doily variety) paired with black patent leather Mary Janes were all the rage. And when I say all the rage, I mean 2nd grade holiday chic. I remember ferociously pulling off that squiggly plastic sock tag, making sure my new lacy socks were unreturnable and therefore mine forever. They had that perfectly pressed fold-over crease with the cute wavy lace at the edges. I was never fully dressed up without them.
And now, ladies and gents, they're BACK! Well, sort of. Valentino had it first with his t-strap sock-looking booties this season, making some serious surf-worthy waves in the street style world. Then at Chanel, there was an abundance of ribbed-white-socks-attached-to-black-heels marching down the runway. We saw the same for Saint Laurent, only with a little more glam and glitter and a little less heel.
The best was the DIY version seen on the streets of Paris, where one pedestrian borrowed her dad's Nike tube socks (I'm speculating, they could very well be her step-dad's) and paired them with block heeled sandals. YOWZA.
Can this fusion of white-socks-attached-to-black-shoes be the new jumpsuit? It's a hassle-free, one-stop-shop, two-for-the-price-of-one (or 9, depending on your usual shoes spending habits, ya dig?) deal! It even one ups the jumpsuit with it's lack of bathroom interference, ya know?
I sent the above street style photo to my brother, thinking he'd be stoked about the comeback of socks as a high-fashion statement, since he's in the sock business....his response? "Terrible look!" I was so disappointed. "But it's so Michael Jackson chic!" I cried. I'm definitely on team Sockify Me.
Do you agree with my bro? Horrified or Edgified? Cast your votes.
